Since 2024, Okayama University has been commissioned by Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) to implement the "Global Network Project to Promote Study in Japan (ASEAN Regional Office)" to encourage students from ASEAN countries to study in Japan. This project builds on the success of two previous initiatives: the "Study in Japan Coordinator Project (Myanmar)" (2014–2018) and the "Study in Japan Global Network Project in ASEAN" (2019–2023).
The core goal of the project is to increase the number of international students from ASEAN countries to over 100,000 within five years, representing 2.7 times the number in 2023. It also aims to contribute to Japan’s overarching target of hosting 380,000 international students by 2033. The project places a special focus on strengthening academic and cultural exchanges between Malaysia and Japan, promoting Study in Japan programs to achieve this.
Specific measures include providing detailed and practical information, such as university profiles and scholarship opportunities, to prospective students through social media, individual and group consultations, and seminars. Furthermore, the project leverages past experience and the resources of the Consortium of Six National Universities in Japan (SixERS)* and other organizations to support Malaysian students and educators, offering personalized advice and organizing educational fairs and seminars.
*SixERS: Chiba University, Niigata University, Kanazawa University, Nagasaki University, Kumamoto University, and Okayama University.
